49ers' Deebo Samuel Out at Least a Couple of Games With Hamstring Injury
Update: San Francisco ruled out Mike Evans, Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel and three defensive players for Sunday at Atlanta, and may play with fewer than 48 healthy players. Christian Kirk returns.
San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel injured his right hamstring in Sunday's 32-29 win at Seattle and will miss at least the next couple of games. "It got him pretty good," Kyle Shanahan said after Monday's tests. "He's going to miss some time."
Who is left at receiver?
Mike Evans, Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks and Jacob Cowing, with Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling and DeMarcus Robinson on injured reserve and Christian Kirk unlikely to come back this week. "I think we have enough," Shanahan said. Linebacker Garret Wallow also hurt a hamstring and will miss at least a couple of weeks.
Is anyone coming back?
Possibly. Shanahan said Nick Bosa (calf), Kyle Juszczyk (knee) and defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. (ankle) have a chance to play Monday night against Washington but are not yet good to go. Dre Greenlaw's one-game suspension is under appeal; if it stands, rookie Jaden Dugger is the main replacement. San Francisco is 5-0.
Is Mike Evans hurt now too?
Yes, though Shanahan does not think it is long term. Evans did not practice last week because of Achilles tendinitis, played after telling Shanahan he was ready, caught three passes for 94 yards and left with 1:10 left in the first half. "That was the confidence he gave me, but we knew he might not be able to last," Shanahan said, adding that no further imaging was planned. Evans' availability at Atlanta is unclear. Christian Kirk's practice window is open and Shanahan called him "a possibility" for Sunday.
Who is out at Atlanta?
Evans (Achilles tendinitis), Bosa (calf), Samuel (hamstring), safety Marques Sigle (ankle) and linebackers Luke Gifford (groin) and Garret Wallow (hamstring). Cornerback Upton Stout and safety Siran Neal are questionable. Christian Kirk is listed as questionable, but Kyle Shanahan called it procedural and said he will play. Shanahan said Bosa had been "a little too optimistic" about returning and that he could not remember ever entering a game short of 48 players. "It's a unique situation," he said.
