49ers Lose Kyle Juszczyk, Marques Sigle and Upton Stout to Injuries in Win Over Broncos
Update: the NFL rescinded Juszczyk's $14,926 fine after acknowledging his celebration was a juice box, not a beer. He is expected to miss two to three weeks with a knee sprain and bone bruise.
The San Francisco 49ers beat Denver 24-14 to stay unbeaten but lost three more players along the way. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk injured his knee, safety Marques Sigle hurt his ankle and slot cornerback Upton Stout has a suspected AC joint sprain.
How serious is Juszczyk's injury?
Early signs are encouraging. "They're thinking it was probably a knee sprain. The ACL and stuff looked intact," Shanahan said. Juszczyk was hit by Broncos defensive back Jahdae Barron early in the fourth quarter and ruled out after catching two passes for 28 yards.
What about the defensive backs?
Sigle had a stinger in the third quarter, came back, and hurt his ankle with 2:15 left. Stout was injured in the third quarter and returned briefly. "Stout, they're guessing an AC, but we won't know for sure until tomorrow," Shanahan said. Each finished with six tackles. The 49ers were already without Nick Bosa, C.J. West and three receivers.
What did the MRI show?
A knee sprain and a bone bruise, with a two-to-three-week absence expected, sources told ESPN. Juszczyk, a Pro Bowl selection in each of the past 10 seasons, has four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown this year.
What happened with the fine?
The league had fined Juszczyk $14,926 on Sept. 23 for what it took to be a beer-chugging celebration. He appealed, pointing to his nickname, Juice, and the juice-box artwork on his thigh pads, and the NFL withdrew the fine, saying he was "simulating drinking a juice box, not a beer." "Even if it was beer, which it wasn't, I still felt like it wasn't an infraction," Juszczyk said. Ocean Spray then signed him to an endorsement deal and gave away 14,926 bottles of juice.
