49ers Activate George Kittle From PUP List, Christian McCaffrey Also Back

The tight end, working back from a torn Achilles, took the biggest step yet in his recovery with individual drills, while McCaffrey returned to practice for the first time since Aug. 10.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle says he's closing in on a return to practice as he works back from the torn Achilles he suffered in January, with the next two weeks set to determine whether he's ready for the team's regular-season opener in Australia.

How is his recovery progressing?

Kittle has been running and cutting at nearly full speed on a side field during practices and says he's close to hitting his pre-injury GPS speed benchmarks, though no official return-to-practice date has been confirmed.

What happens if he's not ready in time?

The 49ers open the season against the Rams at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sept. 10. Kittle said that if he can't practice before the team departs for Australia, he'll stay home to continue rehab rather than travel just to watch from the sideline.

What's the latest?

San Francisco activated Kittle from the physically unable to perform list on Sunday, the most significant step yet in his recovery, though he was limited to individual drills rather than full team reps in his first practice back. Christian McCaffrey also returned to practice that day for the first time since Aug. 10, doing individual work plus roughly seven team-drill reps, including some carries. "Having both those guys back gave us a real boost late in camp," offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said. Neither has yet been confirmed for full practice participation.
