Minkah Fitzpatrick's Interception Ends Jets' 21-Game Drought in Loss at Chicago

Update: Fitzpatrick intercepted Tyson Bagent in the second quarter at Chicago, ending a drought that had reached 21 games, 643 pass attempts and 638 days. The Jets still lost 23-12.

New York Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick practiced in full Thursday and is ready to play Sunday at Chicago after missing two games with a groin injury he suffered on the sixth play of the season opener at Tennessee.

Why does it matter?

The Jets have not intercepted a pass in 20 games, a span of 632 opponent attempts. Fitzpatrick, acquired from Miami in a trade and signed to a three-year, $40 million deal, was brought in to fix that. "It would be very nice, very sweet to make the slump-busting interception," he said. Of the injury: "As a DB with the groin, it's kind of tough."

What did he say about the defense?

That it is settling in under Aaron Glenn: "I think A.G. has gotten in a groove and figured out what he wants." New York is 1-2 and will be without running back Breece Hall, who is week-to-week with a quad injury.

Did he end the drought?

Yes, in his first game back. Fitzpatrick picked off Bagent in the second quarter and the Jets turned it into a field goal to make it 7-3. It was New York's first interception since Ashtyn Davis caught one on Jan. 5, 2025. The 2025 Jets were the first team since tracking began in 1933 to go a full season without an interception. Chicago won 23-12, outgaining New York 492 to 157.
