Travis Kelce bought into the Cleveland Guardians. 'I'm just a kid from the Heights living the dream.'
The Chiefs tight end grew up riding the light rail downtown with his father to watch Guardians games. Now he's part of the ownership group, joining LeBron James and Patrick Mahomes as active athletes who own pieces of MLB franchises.
Travis Kelce has acquired a minority stake in the Cleveland Guardians, joining the ownership group led by David Blitzer. The team is valued at approximately $1.7 billion, up from $1 billion in 2022. Kelce grew up in Cleveland Heights and was a serious baseball player before football took over.
Why the Guardians?
Kelce grew up in Cleveland Heights and has talked about his connection to the city throughout his career. As a kid he would ride the light rail downtown with his father to keep score at Guardians games. He hit .588 with six home runs as a high school senior in 2008 before football became his full-time focus. 'There was nothing like Cleveland baseball in the '90s,' he told ESPN. 'I'm just a kid from the Heights living the dream.'
What does the ownership stake involve?
Kelce joins the minority ownership group as an investor and ambassador. He described his role as coming in to 'observe and learn' and support the team and the city. The purchase price was not disclosed. The Guardians are currently valued at roughly $1.7 billion. Lead minority owner David Blitzer brought Kelce into the group. The Guardians lead the AL Central by nine games.
How does this fit the active-athlete ownership trend?
Kelce now joins two of his closest associates in the ownership category. LeBron James holds a minority stake in the Boston Red Sox. Patrick Mahomes, his Chiefs quarterback, owns a piece of the Kansas City Royals. The pattern reflects both the financial profile of top athletes in 2026 and the loosening of league rules around cross-sport ownership that had previously blocked these arrangements. Kelce's purchase is in baseball, which has no restriction on NFL players holding stakes.
