Lawrence McCutcheon, Rams Running Back and Longtime Scout, Dies at 76

McCutcheon led the Rams in rushing five straight seasons in the 1970s and later spent more than three decades in their front office. His family said he died after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Lawrence McCutcheon, the running back who led the Los Angeles Rams in rushing every season from 1973 to 1977 and later spent more than 30 years in their front office, died Friday at 76. His family announced his death through the team, saying he died after "a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease."

What was his career?

The Rams drafted McCutcheon out of Colorado State in 1972. Known as "Clutch," he was a second-team All-Pro in 1974 and left the Rams in 1980 as their career rushing leader, then finished his playing days with the Broncos, Seahawks and Bills. He played in 11 postseason games, and in the Super Bowl that ended the 1979 season he threw a touchdown pass to Ron Smith that put the Rams ahead before Pittsburgh rallied.

What came after?

More than three decades in the Rams' front office, including 13 years as director of player personnel from 2003 until his retirement in 2016, shortly before the team moved back to Los Angeles. His son Daylon played cornerback for the Browns from 1999 to 2006. His family said he "earned the respect and admiration of teammates, opposing players, colleagues and fans alike," and that "Clutch will be missed and remembered forever."
