Patrick Mahomes cleared for OTAs as Chiefs map a cautious ACL return

Andy Reid says his quarterback is throwing and on track for the May 26 start of organized team activities, with Week 1 in Denver still the target.

Five months after tearing his ACL and LCL in a Week 16 loss, Patrick Mahomes is on the field again, at least in shorts. Head coach Andy Reid said this week that his three-time MVP is cleared to take part in the Chiefs' first OTA block from May 26 through 28. It is a meaningful checkpoint in a recovery the franchise has guarded carefully.

What exactly is Mahomes cleared to do?

OTAs are Phase 2 of the offseason program. There is no contact, no offense-versus-defense work, no pads. Drills are structured and supervised but carry none of the physical risk of full-speed team periods. Reid described his quarterback as 'in a good position to be able to do some things' and confirmed Mahomes is already throwing on his own. That's a meaningful step from January, when Mahomes was still in a brace.

What did Andy Reid actually say?

Reid's framing was deliberately measured. He praised Mahomes' work, saying 'he's doing a lot of stuff right now, he is throwing the ball, he does it on his own.' He also emphasized that the team isn't going to push the timeline. The next checkpoint, mandatory minicamp in mid-June, will be the moment to evaluate whether Mahomes can run a real team period. The Chiefs have been clear they want the clock to be rolling before training camp, not during it.

Is Week 1 against Denver realistic?

Sources close to the team continue to say yes. The Chiefs open the regular season on the road against the Broncos, and team and league reporting both indicate Kansas City believes Mahomes will play. ACL recoveries for NFL quarterbacks typically run 9 to 11 months when uncomplicated. Mahomes will be at roughly nine months from surgery on opening Sunday. That puts him inside the window, but at the early edge of it. Expect the team to manage his preseason reps to almost zero.

What's the backup plan if he isn't ready?

Backup Carson Wentz, signed last offseason as insurance, would start. Wentz took every snap in the AFC Championship and Super Bowl LX run, going 3-0 in the regular season before falling to Seattle in the title game. The bigger question for the Chiefs isn't whether Wentz can hold the fort for a game or two. It's how much of the offensive playbook gets simplified in the early weeks while Mahomes ramps back to full mobility.

Why is the team being so cautious in May?

Mahomes is 30 years old and under contract through 2031. Every conversation inside the building is framed against that contract length and the franchise's championship window. Reid has lived this story before. Andy Reid's Eagles teams in the 2000s rushed quarterbacks back from knee injuries and paid for it later. The Chiefs would rather Mahomes miss Week 1 entirely than push him into a setback that costs him October.
