Raiders' Ashton Jeanty Believed to Have Sprained Ankle, Not Serious Knee Injury
Coach Klint Kubiak says the rookie running back is 'on the mend' from what the team believes is a low ankle sprain, with his Week 1 status against Miami still unresolved.
Las Vegas Raiders rookie running back Ashton Jeanty is believed to have a sprained ankle rather than a serious knee injury, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, a significant downgrade from initial fears after he left Sunday's practice unable to put weight on his leg.
How did it happen?
Jeanty was hurt while diving for a pass and colliding with a teammate. He was helped off the field unable to put weight on his right leg, with teammates reportedly taking a knee as he was carted off. The injury isn't considered long-term, though an exact return timeline hasn't been announced.
What's his background?
Jeanty was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 draft out of Boise State, the highest a running back had been drafted since Saquon Barkley went second overall in 2018. He was the 2024 Heisman runner-up after rushing for an FBS-leading 2,601 yards in his final college season and is Boise State's all-time leading rusher.
What's the latest update?
Coach Klint Kubiak said Tuesday that Jeanty is "on the mend." The team believes it's more of a low ankle sprain than a high one, sustained while diving for a low pass from Kirk Cousins, and doesn't consider it long-term. Still, no firm return date has been given, leaving his status for the Week 1 opener against Miami unresolved.
