Brock Bowers Returns From Knee Procedure With 116 Yards as Raiders Go to 3-0

Update: Bowers returned in Week 3 with 10 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown in a 35-27 comeback win at New Orleans that moved the Raiders to 3-0.

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers underwent a meniscus trim on Tuesday for a knee injury suffered in training camp and will miss Sunday's opener against Miami, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting he is expected to be out a game or two.

Who fills in?

Michael Mayer takes over as the starting tight end. In the four games Bowers missed last season, Mayer averaged six targets a game, compared with fewer than three when Bowers played.

Could he be back for Week 2?

The Raiders list Bowers as day-to-day for Sunday's game at the Chargers. "If he's ready to play, he's going to play," coach Klint Kubiak said, adding that Bowers is "working his tail off to get back out on the field" and that the team will follow its trainers and wellness coordinator Alex Guerrero on the call. Mayer, freshly extended, caught six passes for 32 yards on seven targets in the 27-13 win over Miami.

How did his return go?

Ten catches, 116 yards and a touchdown, his sixth career game with at least 10 receptions. "It felt good to be back," Bowers said of the meniscus trim. "I thought it was nothing. Had to get it done and get it right." He returned to practice Sept. 18 and sat out the final session before the game as planned. "To come off an injury and play the way he did was very impressive, and we needed it," Klint Kubiak said. Las Vegas used multiple tight ends on 52 of 63 plays, and the two teams combined for six touchdowns by tight ends, which ties the most in a game since 1981. Receiver Jack Bech fractured his forearm and is expected to miss time.
