Calais Campbell is back for a 19th season, and he says it's probably his last

The 39-year-old defensive lineman returned to Baltimore for one more run. A six-time Pro Bowler and a Walter Payton Man of the Year, he's chasing the ring that has eluded one of the most respected careers in the sport.

Calais Campbell is entering his 19th NFL season, and he says it's probably the end. The 39-year-old defensive lineman returned to the Ravens for one more run at the championship that has stayed just out of reach across one of the longest and most decorated careers in modern football.

Why come back at 39?

The ring. Campbell has done nearly everything else in football: six Pro Bowls, a long run as one of the league's most disruptive and durable interior linemen, and a reputation as one of the most respected men in the sport. What he doesn't have is a Super Bowl, and a contending Ravens team gives him a real shot. At this stage, a veteran of his stature returns for a specific reason, and for Campbell it's the one accomplishment missing from the resume.

Can he still play?

Evidently, or he wouldn't be back. Campbell has defied the typical aging curve for big men, staying productive deep into his thirties when most interior linemen are long retired. The Ravens wouldn't bring him back to be a ceremonial presence; they want snaps from a player who can still hold up against the run and push the pocket. His durability and football IQ have let him age gracefully at a position that usually punishes longevity.

What's his legacy?

Among the most complete in his era, on and off the field. Campbell is a Walter Payton Man of the Year, the league's highest honor for community impact, and a respected leader in every locker room he's been part of. On the field, his combination of size, length, and consistency made him a problem for two decades. Whether or not the final season ends with a title, Campbell retires as the kind of player and person the league holds up as an example. A ring would be the perfect closing chapter.
