Ravens Lose Both Centers, Then Trade a Second-Round Pick for Cam Jurgens
Update: Baltimore traded a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 fifth to Philadelphia for two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens on Oct. 7. He is in the concussion protocol, so Ioane is still expected to start Sunday night.
The Baltimore Ravens came home from Rio with a win and without a center. Starter Jovaughn Gwyn has an ankle injury and backup Ethan Pocic has a knee injury, and coach Jesse Minter said both "look like they'll be a little bit long-term type of things." Injured reserve is likely for both.
Who plays center?
Possibly Vega Ioane, the first-round pick who has started at right guard. He took 17 snaps at center out of 2,149 in his career at Penn State. Minter is counting on his quarterback to smooth it over: "Lamar's the ultimate 'make it work' player. He will make it right."
Any good news up front?
Left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who missed the Dallas game with a toe injury, is expected to return this week against Tennessee. Minter said the week off gave him "a chance to hopefully get right."
What did the Ravens do about it?
They traded for Cam Jurgens on Wednesday, sending Philadelphia a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 fifth for Jurgens and a 2027 seventh. Gwyn's injury is a broken fibula with a two-to-three-month timeline. Jurgens is in the concussion protocol after Sunday's game, which leaves Ioane as the likely starter in Atlanta.
