Ravens Rule Out Zay Flowers Against Saints; Ja'Kobi Lane on IR After Wrist Surgery
Update: Baltimore downgraded Flowers to out for Sunday against New Orleans. Lane is on injured reserve after wrist surgery, cornerback T.J. Tampa joined him with a knee injury, and left tackle Ronnie Stanley is questionable.
Baltimore Ravens receiver Zay Flowers is day-to-day after aggravating his left hamstring in the first half of Sunday's 41-23 win at Indianapolis, coach Jesse Minter said, while third-round rookie Ja'Kobi Lane will be out longer with what NFL Network reported as a wrist fracture.
How is Flowers?
He left with about five and a half minutes to go in the first half after piling up 150 receiving yards, the most by any player in a first half in three years. It's the same hamstring he hurt in joint practices with Minnesota on Aug. 20. "I feel pretty good about where that's at. We'll see how the week goes though there," Minter said, adding, "You want to make sure that it's not something you're dealing with for 17, 18 weeks."
How thin is the receiver room?
Lane, the No. 3 receiver, finished with one catch for 11 yards before the injury, and Devontez Walker is dealing with a groin issue. That leaves LaJohntay Wester, Elijah Sarratt and practice-squad elevation Chris Moore as the healthy options. "I've got a lot of confidence in those guys," Minter said of Walker and Sarratt.
What's the latest on Lane?
Lane had surgery on the fractured wrist Wednesday morning and was placed on injured reserve, so the earliest he can return is Week 6. "I know he'll be chomping at the bit to get back," Minter said. Rashod Bateman is in line for more targets if Flowers can't go: "Injuries are part of the game, and his is unfortunate," Bateman said. Walker, Wester, Sarratt and Chris Moore have 21 catches combined over three seasons.
Will Flowers play against the Saints?
Probably not. He missed practice early in the week, returned Friday and is listed as doubtful, which leaves Rashod Bateman as the top target with Wester, Sarratt, Walker and Moore behind him.
What changed on Saturday?
Flowers went from doubtful to out. Over the past 18 games he has 91 catches for 1,361 yards, while every other Ravens receiver combined has 55 for 814. "The ball can really go anywhere in our offense," Minter said. "Just being very precise and detailed, playing fast and confident, we have confidence in all those guys." Baltimore also put cornerback T.J. Tampa on injured reserve with a knee injury, signed linebacker Carl Jones from the practice squad and elevated tackle Gerad Lichtenhan, with Ronnie Stanley questionable because of a toe injury.
