Week 2: Vikings Visit Bears With Murray in Concussion Protocol

Read the full recap →

The Minnesota Vikings visit the Chicago Bears on Sunday, September 20, in an NFC North game between 1-0 teams. Kyler Murray remains in the concussion protocol after leaving his Vikings debut 11 plays in; Kevin O'Connell said he came in feeling pretty good but has not ruled him in or out, and Carson Wentz, who threw three touchdowns in the 29-0 finish against Green Bay, would make his 100th career start if Murray isn't cleared. Chicago scored 59 points on Carolina, running for 291 yards and six touchdowns, with Caleb Williams throwing for 269 yards and two scores without a turnover. Brian Flores blitzed on more than 80 percent of snaps in Week 1.

Murray or Wentz

Minnesota was outgained 419-239 by Green Bay and won anyway; Wentz's 123.5 rating in relief makes the quarterback question less dire than it looked Sunday.

Flores' blitz against Williams

The Vikings' pressure rate broke Green Bay's protection in the second half; Williams was clean against Carolina and now faces the league's most aggressive defense.

Chicago's ground game

D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai both topped 100 yards, the kind of balance that punishes a blitz-heavy scheme.

How the prediction did

Predicted 20-27 (Vikings vs Bears), final was 9-3. Miss. Carson Wentz and the Vikings won a game with no touchdowns on three Will Reichard field goals, with Aaron Jones Sr. running for 105 yards. Chicago outgained Minnesota 297 to 246 but turned it over twice, and an offense that scored 59 a week earlier managed three points. The projected total of 47 missed by 35.

Chicago's run game is the antidote to Minnesota's blitz

A defense sending five or six on most snaps is vulnerable to a team that just averaged 7.5 yards per carry.

Minnesota's offense is thin on evidence

Wentz's relief outing was excellent but came against a defense without Micah Parsons, and the Vikings managed 239 total yards.

Flores can wreck any game plan

Four second-half sacks and two takeaways against Green Bay is why the margin stays at a touchdown rather than wider.

The pick backs Chicago's balance at home. The line moved from 3.5 to 5.5 after Week 1, and the model lands a little above it.
