Derwin James is the NFL's highest-paid safety again. Three years, $75.6 million.

The Chargers locked up their four-time All-Pro on a deal that resets the safety market for the second time in James' career. His agent David Mulugheta negotiated $57.5 million in guarantees.

The Chargers and Derwin James agreed to a three-year, $75.6 million extension with $57.5 million in guarantees, per his agent David Mulugheta. It makes James the NFL's highest-paid safety for the second time. The first time was 2022. The market moved around him, and he moved it again.

What are the contract details?

Three years, $75.6 million total, $57.5 million guaranteed, $25.2 million average per year. The deal surpasses the extension Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton signed in 2025, which had held the market-top position. James now becomes the first player to reset the safety market twice. His 2022 deal was four years at $76.4 million; this one pays him more per year on fewer guaranteed years, which reflects both his age (he turns 30 in August) and his leverage as a proven All-Pro.

What did James do to earn this?

Four All-Pro selections total, including 2025. Under defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, James produced 7.5 sacks over the past two seasons, the most productive pass-rush stretch of his career. He primarily aligned in the nickel, where his ability to play the run, blitz, and cover in man made him one of the few safeties in the league who changes game plans at the coordinator level. His only down season was 2023, the year he missed Pro Bowl honors for the only time as a healthy player. He came back in 2024 and re-established himself as the best player at his position.

How does the Chargers' defense look around him?

Chris O'Leary was promoted from defensive backs coach to defensive coordinator this offseason after Minter left. O'Leary coached James directly for two seasons. His comment on the extension: 'One of my favorite players I've ever worked with and coached because of how contagious his energy is.' The continuity matters. James has operated as a de facto defensive captain since arriving in 2018, and the Chargers' scheme under both Minter and now O'Leary has been designed around his specific combination of skills.

What is the injury context?

James missed most of the 2019 and 2021 seasons with knee and foot injuries respectively. Since 2022 he has been largely available, playing at least 14 games in each of the past three seasons. The guarantees in this extension reflect that durability track record over the past three years rather than the injury-interrupted early portion of his career. At $57.5 million guaranteed, the Chargers are betting on the version of James they have seen since the 2022 contract, not the version that spent parts of two seasons on injured reserve.
