New Eagles OC Sean Mannion on Jalen Hurts: 'He can do anything we ask of him'
The first-time NFL offensive coordinator opens his Philadelphia tenure with a clear message: Hurts is the foundation, the playbook gets built around him.
Sean Mannion took the podium at the NovaCare Complex on Thursday for his first press conference as the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator. His message was direct: the offense will be built around Jalen Hurts, the Super Bowl LIX MVP, with new wrinkles added rather than a wholesale system overhaul.
Who is Sean Mannion?
Former Oregon State quarterback, drafted by the Rams in the third round in 2015, who spent eight years as an NFL backup before transitioning to coaching. Joined Green Bay as an offensive assistant in February 2024 and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in January 2025. The Eagles hired him in February 2026 after Kellen Moore left to take the Saints head-coaching job.
What did Mannion say about Hurts?
He kept it simple. 'He can do anything we ask of him.' Mannion described Hurts as 'hungry for more' and committed to building the playbook around the quarterback's strengths rather than asking the quarterback to adapt to a foreign system. The framing matters because Hurts was reportedly frustrated with Moore's late-season concept choices during the 2025 playoff loss to Detroit.
What changes from the Moore offense?
Mannion said the offense will be 'a blend' of what worked under Moore (Hurts' RPO menu, designed quarterback runs, the Saquon Barkley-led downhill running game) and what Mannion learned working with Jordan Love in Green Bay. The Packers ran heavy 12-personnel sets in 2025 and built timing routes off play action. Expect more of that and slightly less zone-read in Philadelphia.
What did Mannion say about the roster?
He praised the receiver room (A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and 2026 second-round pick Bru McCoy), the offensive line (Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, Cam Jurgens) and Barkley. Mannion described the Eagles' supporting cast as 'as complete as any team in the league' and said the challenge for him was to put the existing pieces in better positions, not to find new pieces.
What's the expectation?
The Eagles open at +1300 to win Super Bowl LXI, tied for fifth in the NFC. The roster is built to compete now. Philadelphia drew the easiest first-place schedule in the league. Mannion is the variable. A successful year-one hire produces a top-five passing offense and another deep playoff run. A miss makes him a one-year story, and Howie Roseman will find a more experienced OC in 2027.
