Kyler Murray had his best day yet at Minnesota Vikings training camp, completing 6 of 7 passes and taking 16 of 22 first-team reps in 11-on-11 drills, including three deep completions to Justin Jefferson. J.J. McCarthy struggled by comparison, getting intercepted by linebacker Blake Cashman with the second team against the first-team defense.
Is the competition actually settling?
Not definitively. A day earlier, during a rain-shortened, walkthrough-paced indoor practice, McCarthy actually out-snapped Murray 32-26, the first time that's happened in camp. The swing in reps from one day to the next underscores how fluid the battle remains.
What is Jefferson saying about it?
Asked what he's seen from the two quarterbacks, Jefferson kept it simple: "Improvement." He added that he hopes the competition benefits McCarthy regardless of who ultimately wins the job.
What else is developing at Vikings camp?
Left tackle Christian Darrisaw said he feels "the best I've felt in two years" after tearing multiple knee ligaments in October 2024 and is on track to be a full-time starter again. Rookie defensive lineman Caleb Banks is fully cleared from a broken foot and has been working with the first team alongside fellow rookies Domonique Orange and Jake Golday.
